About my most recent work in soft sculpture :

The crocheted forms I have been working on are explorations in creating fully three dimensional works with this one more traditional technique of crochet. I have been trying these forms as "base structures" for creating bronze and glass pieces, but until now I haven't explored them fully as pieces in and of themselves. The crochet technique is a very close and personal way of working for me. It holds a deep connection to my mother and I treasure that concept of the shared knowledge that is handed down through a generation of women, from grandmother to granddaughter/ mother to daughter.

There are layers of tradition there, layers of knowledge. There is the chain connecting through each woman. Like the technique itself, each chain builds a layer and the successive layers shape the whole form. Nothing can be separated into its individual parts without losing the shape of the whole.
So taking this and putting it together with ideas of mathematics and nature where the strands and numbers of particles, elements, DNA    sequences - patterns ; these go into building and effecting the outcome of the whole. The many particles, the chain, the strand - give rise to the fullness and completeness of each form.
